Background: Dental biofilms created by Streptococcus mutans are a key cause of dental caries. This bacteria strongly attaches to teeth, produces extracellular polysaccharides, and forms organized biofilms, which play a major role in its ability to cause disease.Fluoride-based products are commonly used to prevent caries due to their ability to kill bacteria and help restore minerals to teeth.
Objective: This study aims to assess the combined antibiofilm effect of stannous fluoride (SnF₂) and amine fluoride against oral Streptococcus mutans in a laboratory setting.
Materials and Methods:
Standard cultures of S.mutans were treated with SnF₂, amine fluoride, and the combination of both. The antibacterial effect was tested using the agar well diffusion method.Theantibiofilm effect was measured by quantifying biofilm biomass with crystal violet staining and by counting the number of viable cells after fluoride treatment.
Results: The combination of SnF₂ and amine fluoride showed a more effective reduction in bacterial growth and biofilm formation compared to each fluoride agent used alone.
Crystal violet analysis showed a significant decrease in biofilm mass, and viable cell counts showed a notable drop in bacterial survival after combined fluoride treatment. These results suggest that the combined fluoride treatment has a stronger antibacterial and antibiofilm effect against S.mutans.
Conclusion: The study indicates that using stannous fluoride and amine fluoride together may offer better protection against dental plaque and caries by preventing the growth of S.
mutans and stopping biofilm development.More research using multispecies biofilms, animal models, and clinical trials is needed to confirm the effectiveness and practical use of this dual-fluoride approach in dental care products.
