Abstract

Oral health plays an important role in maintaining overall health and well-being. Conventional liquid mouthwashes are commonly used for maintaining oral hygiene, but they possess certain drawbacks such as unpleasant taste, alcohol content, stability issues, and difficulty in portability. To overcome these limitations, the present study was carried out to formulate and evaluate effervescent mouthwash tablets using the direct compression method.

The formulation was prepared using citric acid, tartaric acid, and sodium bicarbonate as effervescent agents along with excipients such as mannitol, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sodium saccharin, peppermint oil, menthol, talc, and magnesium stearate. The prepared powder blend was evaluated for pre-compression parameters including angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, Carr’s Index, and Hausner ratio. The compressed tablets were further evaluated for post-compression parameters such as general appearance, weight variation, hardness, thickness, effervescence time, and moisture content.

The results showed satisfactory flow properties and acceptable compressibility of the powder blend. The prepared tablets exhibited adequate mechanical strength, uniformity, rapid effervescence, and good stability. The study concluded that effervescent mouthwash tablets can be considered a convenient, stable, and patient-friendly alternative to conventional liquid mouthwash formulations for maintaining oral hygiene.
